Construction of the long-awaited Hashem Khal Bridge at Chandraghona-Kadamtali Union in Rangunia Upazila of Chittagong is on the way to be finished.  The contractor has already completed 60 percent of the work on the bridge.  The bridge will be opened to traffic next June, the company said.  As a result, the long-term grief of 20,000 families in 5 villages of Chandraghona-Kadamtali Union No 11 is coming to an end.

The bridge is being constructed with the special initiative of Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud.  The local residents have expressed satisfaction over this.

Sultan Ali, a farmer from Katakhali village, said, "Everything is beyond us.  From shopping to children's schooling, to going to the doctor, selling farm produce-everything.  It took a lot of suffering to travel through the broken bridge.  The bridge will end our long suffering. '

Upazila Engineer Didarul Alam said, 'Under Greater Chittagong Rural Infrastructure Development Project-3, this bridge is being constructed on Hashem Khal of Dobhashi Bazar GC Road through Katakhali of Chandraghona-Kadamtali Union No 11 of the upazila.  The contract value of which is Tk 3 crore 70 lakh 86 thousand 926.  It is a PC girder bridge, which is 37 meters long and 7 meters wide.  The construction of the bridge is nearing completion.’  He said it would be possible to open it to the public by next June. Chandraghona-Kadamtali UP Chairman Idris Azgar said, “Hashem Khal, which flows through the middle of the union, has divided the union into two.

More than 20,000 people live in 5 villages including Kadamtali and Katakhali on the east and west banks of this canal.  In their daily work, they have to travel to different places including the only secondary school of the Union, Union Parishad, Madrasa, Bazar and Krishimath on the other side of this canal.  As a result, the people of this area have been demanding construction of a bridge over Hashem canal for a long time.

Meanwhile, development work of the UP road adjacent to the bridge is underway.  LGED is constructing the road from Katakhali of Mariamnagar Union to Hashem Khal Bridge at a cost of around Tk 2 crore.
