The 20 kilometres journey from Gazipur to airport is a terrifying experience for the commuters travelling the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway every day due to severe gridlock. The Dhaka-Mymensingh highway everyday sees massive snarls with hundreds of vehicles stuck on the road.
We people are spending a lot of money and time due to the chaotic movement of public transport in the city. With the onset of winter, the situation has already started deteriorating further with no sign of effective measures till date caused by mismanagement and non-coordination in the ongoing implementation of the Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. Besides, the drainage system on either side of the road remains in very bad condition.
The government is implementing the country’s first bus rapid transit project since 2018 in order to ease traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Gazipur route. As a result, since then, people have been facing difficulties while travelling from Gazipur to Abdullahpur.
We appreciate the
government’s ongoing
development work but the authorities concerned
must consider the issue of dilapidated
condition of road and severe dust pollution
We appreciate the government’s ongoing development work but the authorities concerned must consider the issue of dilapidated condition of road and severe dust pollution. But it is very unfortunate that authorities have not taken any effective measure to address these problems. The dirt polluted air and the severe gridlock on the roads are killing thousands of passengers’ valuable time and putting their health at stake. It is estimated that over three million people live in the Gazipur City Corporation area with a population density of 1,884/sq km. And many of them travel to capital Dhaka every day to go to their respective workplaces alongside students, businessmen and the common man. Apart from the travellers, people living in the densely populated residential and commercial areas situated on both the sides of Dhaka-Mymensingh highway are the worst sufferers of dust pollution.
We think the Gazipur City Corporation and other stakeholders must take immediate steps to make Dhaka-Mymensingh highway safe and secure for travellers. The city corporation must clean its 18 kilometres main road spraying water for two times daily at least with modern truck-mounted mist sprayers to control dust. Therefore, we believe all stakeholders will come forward and take steps to keep the sufferings of the people to a minimum.
