Achieving a GPA-5 is not the ultimate achievement in life; rather, it is an important beginning on the path to future success, said Chittagong University (CU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Al-Forkan.
He made the remarks while addressing an award ceremony as the chief guest on Sunday afternoon. Fathepur Union Public Library organised the event at the parishad auditorium in Madanhat, Fathepur Union, Hathazari upazila, to honour students who achieved GPA-5 in the SSC examinations.
Professor Al-Forkan urged the students to use their academic success as a stepping stone towards admission to reputed higher education institutions, including medical colleges, engineering universities and Chittagong University.
He said many students from Fathepur achieve good results every year, but their participation in higher education remains lower than expected. Despite Chittagong University being located close to Fathepur, the rate of admission of local students to the university remains low.
He said the situation needed to change and students should be encouraged to dream of higher education from the school level. They should also prepare themselves for university-level education, research and skill development.
The CU VC urged students to remain focused on their studies, warning that excessive use of mobile phones and social media was becoming a major obstacle to academic progress. He advised them to avoid spending excessive hours on mobile phones, Facebook and the internet and instead devote more time to acquiring knowledge and developing skills.
Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin, who attended the programme as a special guest, congratulated the students and urged them to become responsible citizens and dedicate themselves to serving the country and its people. He said good academic results alone were not enough and students must also acquire practical skills.
Among others, former president of the library and former additional secretary Md. Mozammel Haque, retired Deputy Registrar of Chittagong University Md. Sekander Mia, CU Senate Member S. M. Nazrul Islam, founding member Md. Bakhteyar Mia, Professor Abdul Wahab, Fathepur Union Chairman Md. Musa Siddiqui, former chairman Saleh Zahur Md. Bahadur and former chairman Md. Zakir Hossain addressed the programme.
The event was presided over by Mohammad Enamul Haque, convener of Fathepur Union Public Library, and moderated by Md. Farid Uddin Akhtar, member secretary of the library.
At the ceremony, certificates of recognition and commemorative gifts were handed over to the GPA-5 achievers, while the invited guests were presented with commemorative crests. Local dignitaries, teachers, guardians, students and people from various professions attended the event. #EK
