‘Govt working to strengthen local govt bodies’

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Tajul Islam has said the incumbent government is working hard to strengthen the local government system by empowering all the institutions under the Local Government Department including union parishads, municipalities and upazila parishads.

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of ‘Union Parishad-UP Training Modules’ and the first e-learning course organized by the National Local Government Institute-(NILG) at a hotel in the capital on Saturday, said a press release on Sunday.

Referring NIGL as an important institution, the minister said that local representatives from all over the country received training from this institute. Emphasizing on increasing the transparency and accountability of the people’s representatives, the minister said, “Only the people’s representatives can take the country to the pinnacle of development …therefore, various initiatives have been taken to strengthen the institute.”

The minister said that government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working relentlessly to upgrade the training institutes to create an efficient local representative force.

Drawing the attention of the head of the institution, the minister said that while providing training, the representatives must be trained to be aware of their responsibilities, duties and accountability, the release also said.

Noting that the country’s unprecedented development in various sectors has created a lot of potential in cities, towns and villages, the minister called upon the elected representatives to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people.

He urged the citizen and local representatives to work together to materialize the dream of Bangabandhu’s Sonar Bangla.

Senior Secretary of Local Government Division Helaluddin Ahmed presided over the function.

Ambassador of Switzerland to Bangladesh Nathali Suard was present as the special guest.

Saleh Ahmed Mozaffar, Director General of National Institute of Local Government, senior officials of the Local Government Department and NILG officials were also present, among others.
