Govt working to make Ctg port one of world’s top 30

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday said the government is working to make the Chattogram seaport among the top 30 best container ports in the world.

“The capacity of the port is increasing. We are working to bring the Chittagong port from the no. 58 to the no. 30 in the list of the best container ports in the world,” he said.

The Minister made the remarks while briefing the reporters after the meeting of the 14th Advisory Committee of Chattogram Port Authority at Shaheed Munshi Fazlur Rahman auditorium on Sunday.

Khalid said, “He does not want to give the responsibility of operating the port to the unskilled people… I will establish good governance at the port under the leadership of the Prime Minister.”

Foreign investors are interested to pour money in the Bay-terminal and a deal will be finalised, he added.

Chattogram represents Bangladesh and is leading the country. People living in the coastal will be given priority for jobs in ports, rivers and sea-related organisations. But there will be no job without experience, he added.

The minister further said the designated Covid-9 hospital in the port will be modernized. In addition, talks are on to upgrade the port stadium to an international standard.

Shipping minister said, "We are collecting capital dredging equipment for the Karnafuli River. Dredging is required to keep the port open.”

According to sources, the advisory committee meeting proposed to move private container depots or offdocks within 20 km of the port, reduce various offdock service bills, intensify port auctions and destruction of expired goods, traffic jams, port specialized hospitals, toll roads, port stakeholders, trade organizations and various issues have been discussed.

Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury was present at the meeting. Port Chairman Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad highlighted the progress of the decisions of the 13th meeting  with Port Member Md Zafar Alam in the chair.

Deputy Minister for Education Barrister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel, Lawmaker Engineer Mosharraf Hossain,  Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury, Moslem Uddin Ahmed, Wasika Ayesha Khan, Chittagong City Corporation Administrator Khorshed Alam Sujan, Custom House Commissioner Md Fakhrul Alam, CDA Chairman M Jahurul  Alam Dhobas, Zila Parishad Chairman Abdus Salam, C&F Agents Association President AKM Altaf Hossain, Nurul Qayyum Khan, BGMEA Nasiruddin Chowdhury, Saif Powertech Managing Director Tarafdar Md. Ruhul Amin, Khairul Alam Sujan, Nurul Haque were present this occation.

FBCCI Vice President Md. Siddiqur Rahman, BKMEA Md Hatem, Rezaul Karim, Director General of Environment Department Rafiq Ahmed took part in the meeting on Zoom App.
