Govt working to improve education system: Dipu Moni

Published : 21 Jan 2023 09:47 PM

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said, we are transforming the education system, right from pre-primary to higher.  The government is working to improve the education system. We want every student to learn languages, IT, entrepreneurship. Special courses should be given.  They should be practiced in student life.  They don't tell employers to give opportunities.  They will emerge as skilled manpower. Thank you to Bangabandhu's daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.  We have fashion and technology university, maritime university, aviation university and many universities because he started building specialized universities.

Dr Dipu Moni said, We have BGMEA a fashion and technology university in Dhaka.  This is the second.  It is set up in places like Chattogram which is very logical.  It is a sad but true fact that we cannot provide skilled manpower in this growing industry from our universities.  We want to create skilled and qualified manpower in our country.  That is possible.  That is why specialized universities are being created.  This university will help the industry to move up from where it is.  It will meet the shortage of skilled manpower.  Your course will be designed according to the needs of the working world.  You will provide the internship opportunity.

She said these things while addressing the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the specialized educational institution named 'Chattogram BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (CBUFT)' on Saturday afternoon.

The education minister said that there was a deadlock in the fine arts institute in Chattogram.

We sat in discussion with all the students, administration, politicians who are agitating to resolve it.  I listened carefully to the students.  I have discussed to meet their logical demands.  Finally, I went to the institute and opened it.

Deputy Minister of Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel, UGC Member Professor Dr Biswajit Chand, Director Omar Faruq, FBCCI President Md. Jasim Uddin were special guests at the inauguration ceremony at Navy Convention Hall of Tigerpass.  Guest of honour was BGMEA President Faruq Hasan.  CBUFT Board of Trustees was presided over by Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, Founder Chairman.

Nasir Uddin Chowdhury said, our clothing industry is competing with developed countries.  There is no alternative to establishing universities to create a skilled population to keep pace with advanced technology.  This dream journey meets the needs of the fourth industrial revolution.

According to sources, the admission process will start next March.  UGC has approved the admission of 35 students each in four departments.  A total of 140 people will get higher education opportunities in the first semester.  We aim to build a permanent campus within the next five years.

On October 27, 2002, BGMEA instituted the Institute of Fashion and Technology (BIFT) and launched diploma courses.  Over 20 years nearly 5000 students are making significant contributions to the apparel industry at home and abroad by taking diploma and certificate courses in apparel merchandising.

In 2013, the Institute of Fashion and Technology (CBIFT) under the National University was launched to increase the demand and create skilled manpower for recruitment in the garment industry.  Already 500 students have graduated and replaced foreign manpower.  Keeping in mind the fourth industrial revolution, the constant modernization of information technology in the fashion world, the establishment of Fashion and Technology University became essential.  The Ministry of Education approved CBUFT as the 106th private university on 24 August 2022.  The University Grants Commission (UGC) approved the opening of four departments in the university on January 1.  These departments are divided into two faculties.

Under the Faculty of Clothing and Fashion Technology, B.Sc courses will be offered in Textile and Clothing Technology (TCT) and Fashion Design and Technology (FDT) Departments and Bachelor Degrees in Apparel Merchandising and Management (AMM) and Fashion Design (FD) Departments in the Faculty of Fashion and Apparel Design.

There is a plan to start the Faculty of Textile Manufacturing and Engineering (FTME) in the next July-December session.  Students can take BSc degree in Textile Engineering (TE) and Textile Engineering and Management (TEM) department.
