AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, Deputy Minister for Water Resources and former organising secretary of Awami League said, “Due to the timely action of the government, the people of Haor have been saved from great loss. There are 2 lakh 22 thousand 8 hundred and five hectares of haor Of this, 5,765 hectares of haor crops have been damaged.
Record rainfall was recorded in several areas of neighboring India, including Meghalaya and Cherrapunji. There is 1209 ml of rainfall. The haor was damaged due to flooding in that rain water. The amount of damage is 2 percent.
He made the comments while talking to reporters after inspecting the progress of work on protection project of Padma Danti in Naria-Jajira of Shariatpur district on Friday.
The minister said, “In Howrah, 90% of the crops are grown by the farmers. The rest will be over very soon. The Ministry of Water Resources, Water Development Board, District Administration and Agriculture Department have all worked together. Due to the timely action of the government, the haor area has been saved from major damage.”
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu, regularly inquired about Haor. We visited the area regularly. I also worked there for three days. The leave of the officials and employees of the Water Development Board has been canceled and the ministry is working by adopting a plan to solve the problem of Haor permanently. Leader of the people Sheikh Hasina is working relentlessly to make the people of Haor smile,” he said.
The Deputy Minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced the implementation of Deltaplan-2100 to build a livable world class Bangladesh in the future. The Ministry of Water Resources will implement 80 percent of the work of this master plan. If this master plan is implemented, there will be no problem of river erosion and waterlogging in the whole country. The Ministry of Water Resources and the Water Development Board are working tirelessly to implement this master plan.
Awami League central committee member Syed Abdul Awal Shamim, Water Development Board Faridpur region chief engineer Abdul Hakim, Shariatpur executive engineer SM Ahsan Habib and Awami League central science and technology sub-committee member Zahir Sikder were also present during the event.
