Prominent personalities of the country have sought intervention of transport owners' unions and the concerned people of government to curb passenger harassment and fare anarchy in public transport.

They said that passenger harassment and fare anarchy in public transport has increased to a great extent, especially following the lifting of the long lockdown.

The intervention of the concerned people was sought at a discussion meeting held at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia hall of the National Press Club in Dhaka on the occasion of Passenger Rights Day organized by the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity on Monday.

Passenger Rights Day is being observed for the third time in the country as a symbolic day to protest against harassment, fare anarchy, road accidents, unjust and unacceptable activities in public transports. This time the day is being observed under the theme “Effective measures required to stop passenger harassment and fare anarchy”.

During the discussion, Kazi Reazul Hoque, former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, said that human rights were being repeatedly violated on the roads. Thousands of people die in road accidents in this country every year. Bangladesh is in the top position in terms of road anarchy, harassment, and risk among all the countries in the world.

He further said that it is the responsibility of the government to solve these problems.

“The state must come forward to ensure this right. People are not getting justice in cases even after getting killed in road accidents. The anarchy in the transport must be stopped,” he added.

Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, secretary general of Jatri Kalyan Samity said “Extortion of Tk 300 crore is taking place on the roads every month. A new road transport law has been passed but it’s not effective yet.”
