Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim said the government was working to ensure safe and nutritious food for all.

The minister was speaking as the special guest at the inaugural function of National Safe Food Day 2022 at BIAM Foundation Auditorium in New Eskaton on Wednesday.

Secretary of the Ministry of Food Moshammat Nazmanara Khanum presided over the function while Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder was present as the chief guest.

“Once upon a time, we wanted to overcome the food crisis. Now the government wants to ensure safe and nutritious food. In the future, the government will work to provide more quality and rich food to all. The quality and nutrition of fish, meat, milk and eggs are being tested in the laboratory to ensure its quality and nutritional value. With the plan, Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina enacted the Safe Food Act in 2013, which established the Safe Food Authority of 2015.”

He added, “Today, there is a surplus in Bangladesh, not a food crisis. Farmers, workers, hardworking people, farms, entrepreneurs and officials of the concerned ministries from the field level to the center are demanding this achievement. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that not only food shortage but also quality of food needs to be changed.”

He added, “A big supply of food comes from fish, meat, milk and eggs. Fish, meat and eggs have become not only self-sufficient but also surplus and we have reached the stage of exporting to the world. We are working towards success in milk production in the near future." At the same time, we are focusing on the multifaceted use of these food ingredients.”

The minister also called upon all concerned including the media to play a united role in stopping the production and sale of unsafe food without looking only at the government authorities.
