A video of a beach attack scene marks the beginning of filming for the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel. The upcoming film will be the latest in Legendary's kaiju cinematic franchise, MonsterVerse. Beginning in 2014 with Gareth Edwards' Godzilla, the film was followed by the Kong: Skull Island prequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), and the Godzilla vs. Kong match-up in 2021. Following a delay from its original November 2020 release date, the latest MonsterVerse film was released the following year and did relatively well within the pandemic-restricted box office, pulling in over $470 million. That was impressive figure considering the fact that the film was also released on HBO Max simultaneously.

Set five years after Godzilla had defeated King Ghidorah, Godzilla vs. Kong finds the titular giant ape monitored and protected by the government agency known as Monarch. Meanwhile, Godzilla attacks multiple facilities associated with Apex Cybernetics. It is later revealed that its CEO, Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir), has used the skulls of King Ghidorah to help control the robotic kaiju known as Mechagodzilla. After a brief but fierce fight, Godzilla and King Kong team-up and destroy the robot, leaving both monsters agreeing to a tentative peace. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 has been in development, and now filing is underway.

A new video of from 7News Brisbane from the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia reveals that filming for the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel has commenced. The clip from the local news broadcast showed that a local beach was converted by the production into one from Rio de Janerio, Brazil, complete with Brazilian flags, Rio de Janeiro police vehicles, and military law enforcement. Extras populated the beach set and were instructed to run from a giant unseen creature emerging from the waters.

As the kaijus featured in the franchise have been computer-generated, there were no stand-ins or any representation of Godzilla, King Kong, or any other giant creature.

Story details of the upcoming Monster Verse entry has been kept tightly under wraps, but the video shows that at least one kaiju scene will take place in Rio de Janeiro. Why a monster would invade the city was not revealed in the brief clip from the news.

With King Ghidorah's storyline complete, and much of the world's known kaiju gone, audiences have speculated as to what the next MonsterVerse entry would entail. Godzilla vs. Kong's revelation that another world exists within the center of the Earth opens a door to many new creatures to be introduced. With various classic Godzilla monsters yet to be included in the franchise, such as Hedorah, Biollante, or Baragon, as well as another Mothra egg previously teased, there is a lot of room for future enemies and allies for both Godzilla and King Kong. But audiences will need to wait and see what Legendary has in store when Godzilla vs Kong 2 lands in theaters on March 15, 2024.-Collider
