Bangladesh high commission in New Delhi on Friday observed "Genocide Day" in remembrance of the atrocities carried out by Pakistani Army on the unarmed Bangalees on the black night of March 25 in 1971.

The Pakistani Army carried out the brutality in Dhaka and other places across the country under the infamous "Operation Searchlight" to thwart the Awami

League's assumption of office following the victory in the 1970 election. To mark the day, the mission organised several programmes including observing one minute silence to pay tribute to those, who embraced martyrdom on the night, reading out messages from President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,  holding discussion and offering special munajat.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Muhammad Imran and Minister (Consular) Selim Md. Jahamgir took part in the discussion.

Taking part in the discussion, the high commissioner narrated the Pakistani evil design to perpetrate the mass killing on the unarmed Bengalees across the country especially in Dhaka on March 25, 1971.

Citing different historical evidences, he said the Pakistani Army killed thousands of people on the night especially on Dhaka University campus, the

EPR head quarters, Rajarbagh Police lines in Dhaka and some other places across the country.

He said not only March 25, 1971 night, the Pakistani Junta perpetrated genocide throughout the long nine months during Bangladesh's War of

Liberation.

It was a complete "Genocide" as the then Pakistani Army killed more than three million people and raped over two lakh women during the 1971 war, he added.

He emphasised on drawing international attention on the matter of "genocide" against the then Pakistani Army through beefing up diplomatic efforts, write- ups and documentaries.

In the recent times, he said killing in many countries were considered as "genocide" by the international community although the numbers of killing in those countries were much less then Bangladesh.

The high commissioner urged all to help know their children about the fact of Bangladesh's War of Liberation. Earlier, a documentary on the barbaric atrocities of Pakistani Army on the "Black Night" of March 25, 1971 was screened. Officers and employees of the mission attended the programmes.

Besides, a special Munajat was held seeking divine blessings of the departed souls of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, martyred of 1971 liberation war and those who were killed on the fateful night of August 15, 1975.

The "Genocide Day" was also observed in Bangladesh deputy missions/assistant high commissions in Kolkata, Mumbai, Agartala and Guwahati in a befitting manner.
