The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Europe chief on Tuesday says another storm is coming as ‘Omicron’, a new variant of Covid-19.

Therefore, like people of other foreign countries across globe, we are also gravely concerned over the new variant of Coronavirus. Since it emerged in late November, Omicron has been detected in at least 38 of the 53 countries in the WHO’s European region and is already dominant in several of them, including Denmark, Portugal and the United Kingdom. And the new variant will dominate in more countries of the region, pushing already stretched health systems further to the brink.

However, Covid-19 pandemic couldn’t hit our country hard due to the government’s prompt actions to protect most vulnerable people and businesses. And the government is dealing with the pandemic situation successfully and efficiently. Bangladesh is still fighting the Covid-19 pandemic alongside economic revival and keeping the livelihoods running. Besides, the country has managed to secure a steady supply of Covid-19 vaccine.

Every individual should be more

responsible to ensure his or her

own protection

Bangladesh on December 19 launched the Covid-19 booster shot campaign with Pfizer vaccine to scale up its efforts for containing the spread of the lethal virus. Elderly people aged 60 and above, people with comorbidity as well as frontliners will be given the booster dose on priority basis.

Bangladesh has set a target to vaccinate 70 percent people by April next year. Reportedly, the country has 4.63 crore vaccines and nine crore vaccines will arrive at the beginning of the next year. Therefore, we think our country will not face any scarcity of vaccines.

Bangladesh on Tuesday reported 291 Covid-19 cases while the coronavirus claimed overnight one life. The official tally showed that the virus killed 28,051 people and infected 15, 81,634 so far. Therefore, we all have to maintain the health protocol including wearing masks as the Coronavirus might hit the country again during this winter.

As the increasing trend of the Covid-19 continues showing in the USA, England and Europe during the winter, we all people have to be careful about cold and cough.  Therefore, we all must strictly follow the health guidelines to resist the Covid-19 pandemic’s third wave.

Every individual should be more responsible to ensure his or her own protection alongside their family members. The new variant ‘Omicron’ is spreading faster than the Delta one, causing infections in people already vaccinated or recovered from the disease. Therefore, we have to avoid crowd, use masks whenever we go outdoors and get cleaned on our return home and inhale hot water vapour.
