The body of a newsroom editor at the private TV channel GTV, also known as Gazi Television, was discovered floating in Dhaka’s Hatirjheel Lake early Wednesday.
Rahanuma Sarah, 32, was a resident of Kallyanpur, Dhaka, and had been serving as the Newsroom Editor at Gazi TV. She was the daughter of Bakhtiar Shikder from Islam Bagh Krishnapur village in Sonaimuri Upazila, Noakhali.
Passersby retrieved her body from the lake and rushed it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared her dead around 2:00 am.
Md Sagar, one of the individuals who helped bring the body to the hospital, reported seeing it floating in the water.
The night before her death, Rahanuma made a post on Facebook, tagging her friend Fahim Faisal.
She shared several photos with the caption, “It was nice having a friend like you. God bless you always. Hope you'll fulfill all your dreams soon. I know we had a lot of planning together. Sorry, can't fulfill our plans. May God bless you in every aspect of your life,” concluding the post with two heart emojis.
Rahanuma’s family has alleged that she was murdered, making the claim at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Wednesday. However, the police have stated that the cause of her death will be determined after an autopsy.
The circumstances surrounding Rahanuma’s death look mysterious.
Inspector Md Bachchu Mia, in charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed that the body has been sent to the DMCH morgue for examination.
