Gas line leak creates risk of fire in Gazipur

Published : 17 Jul 2022 02:08 AM

In some places of Gazipur's Kaliakair upazila, Titus' unprotected gas lines are leaking and the pipe is useless and gas is continuously coming out. Billions of Tk worth of gas is being wasted due to the great indifference of Titus authorities. On the other hand, fire incidents are happening one after another. On Saturday morning, a fire broke out in a gas line leakage on the side of the Dhaka-Tangail highway. Residents fear major accidents due to frequent gas line fires. Also at great risk are local industries and the public using residential gas lines. Amidst such fears, the locals are drawing the attention of the construction authorities.

Local residents, industrialists, fire service and Titus authorities have informed that the main gas line of Titus Gas Transmission and Distribution Co. Ltd. runs along Dhaka-Tangail highway. This line has been connected to thousands of Titus gas lines of industries and settlements in various areas including Mouchak, Safipur, Chandra, Kaliakair upazila which are scattered. Sometimes there is gas shortage. Stoves do not burn properly in these homesteads due to gas shortage. Thousands of legitimate customers of Titus suffered greatly. Sometimes due to gas shortage, the wheels of industries do not run properly. As a result, the production is disrupted and the industries face losses. In this, the ongoing development of the country suddenly stopped. Despite all this, the illegal connection of gas does not stop in exchange of huge sums of money. Some of Titus' dishonest officers, employees and local brokers are directly and indirectly involved in these illegal connections. Due to these illegal connections, leakages and cracks occur in main gas lines, industrial gas lines and residential lines. Gas is continuously coming out through these leaks. Billions of gas resources are being wasted. Also sometimes fire incidents occur from these leakages.

Receiving the information, the fire service went to the spot and controlled the fire, but sometimes the goods of the factories are getting damaged.

Last Saturday, around 6 am, a fire broke out in the gas line near the Apex Lingerie Limited garment factory in the Upazila's Pallividyut-Matikata road in Purvchandra area.

Local people doused the fire before the fire service personnel reached the spot after receiving the information. However, although there was no damage, there was a lot of damage before and after this gas line fire. However, even if the fire is extinguished, gas is continuously coming out from there in the form of bubbles. Not only in that area, gas has been coming out from leakages in gas lines in various areas including 1 in Harinhati area of the highway, a few in Chandra Pallividyut area, 2 in Purvachandra, 2 in Mouchak Telirchala area.

Saiful Islam, Wire House Inspector of Kaliakor Fire Service, said that the locals extinguished the fire before going to the spot after receiving information about the fire in the gas line in Purbchandra area. Not only at that place, there are leakages and pipe cracks in gas lines at different places. Gas is constantly coming out of it. Although there were fire incidents in those places, they were brought under control after receiving information. Although Titus has repeatedly informed the authorities about these leakages and pipe cracks, they are not taking any action.

Titas Gas Company's Chandra Zonal Office Assistant Engineer Masud bin Yusuf said that these leakages have occurred in the gas line not because of illegal gas connection, but for the development work of the municipality. These problems will be solved soon.
