The government on Friday re-fixed the price of fuel. Immediately after the hike in fuel price, most transport owners kept the vehicle off the roads in capital Dhaka. Besides, transport owners in Chattogram and Khulna have already suspended plying vehicles from Saturday, threatening they would continue until the fares are re-fixed. It needs to be mentioned that earlier in November last year, the government re-fixed the fares of vehicles including buses, coaches, trucks and covered vans.

Commuters on Saturday faced serious transport crisis for the lack of local buses, as most were kept off the roads. The sudden crisis left thousands of passengers stranded in different parts of the city. On the other hand, transport workers on Saturday found charging additional fares from the passengers. They are harassing the passengers for realising additional fare.

Relevant authorities must remain vigilant so that no

one can increase the cost of daily essentials and

transport fares in excuse of fuel price adjustment

All concerned, including divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners and highway and district police must come forward and play an effective role immediately in order to free the commuters from the humiliations, harassments and misbehavior. Besides, they must take stern actions against the transport owners and workers who will be found guilty of harassing passengers and charging extra fares from them. BRTA, the law enforcing agencies and other concerned should make their best efforts to ensure security and comfort of all passengers travelling different places in the country.

It is very unfortunate that we common people are now being held hostage, humiliated, harassed and even pushed on to the streets by the transport workers. The authorities concerned must monitor the overall situation strictly to ensure safety of passengers. The government will have to devise a comprehensive plan in order to thwart any attempt by the transport workers to loot public money.

Relevant authorities must remain vigilant so that no one can increase the cost of daily essentials and transport fares in excuse of fuel price adjustment. We believe Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led government will keep its eyes on the situation and takes required measures immediately.
