Freedom fighter Major Shah Zakaria passes away

Valiant freedom fighter Major (Rtd) Shah Zakaria died at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the capital on Friday.He was 69.

He left behind his wife, a son, two daughters and host of relatives and friends to mourn his death.

Talking to the Bangladesh Post, Rawnak Jahan Sabrina, the elder daughter of Shah Zakaria, confirmed the matter on Saturday.

He was buried in Banani Shena Muktijodha graveyard while well turned out military contingent gave last salute to the freedom fighter.  He hailed from Chakkirti village under Shibganj Upazila of Chapainawabganj district.

During the 1971 Liberation War, he valiantly fought against the enemies (Pakistan Army) under Sector 11 in Jamalpur area. 

He was a student of first batch of the Rajshahi Cadet College. After the Liberation War, he joined JatiyaRakkhiBahini. Later, he joined Bangladesh Army. 

His wife Hasmat JhahanRekha is daughter of Shaheed Mujibur Rahman Kanak. He was a senior government official and a freedom fighter too. Kanak was brutally killed by Pakistani occupational forces during the Liberation War in 1971 in Barguna district.

His two sons-in-law are also serving Bangladesh Army as officers. His two sons-in-law are:Lt Col Hafizur RaihanKabir and Major Shariyar Akter Jhahan.
