Four members of a family suffered burn injuries after an air-conditioner exploded at Dhalpur in Jatrabari area of the capital early Saturday.
The victims have been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The injured were identified as Md Tuhin Hossain, 38, private service employee, his wife Eva Akter, 30 and their two sons—Tanvir, 9 and Tawhid, 7 of Madaripur district.
A fire broke out after the air-conditioner of a room exploded with a big bang around 1:00am, leaving all four members of the family injured.
Later, they were taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said Tuhin suffered burns on 47 percent of his body, Eva 15 percent, Tanvir 40 percent and Tawhid 8 percent.
Kamruzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jatrabari Police Station said “The explosion may have resulted due to a lack of maintenance. It is suspected that the indoor unit of the AC exploded because it had not been cleaned for a long time.”
However, Khaleda Yasmin from the Fire Service Control Room said they were not officially notified of the blast.
“Perhaps the victims were rescued locally and taken to hospital,” she said.
