The court has sent Md Selim, a former surveyor in the Land Acquisition (LA) branch of the Chattogram District Commissioner's Office, to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Judge Mizanur Rahman of the Chattogram Divisional Special Judge's Court gave the order after the hearing on Wednesday.
Court bench assistant Shahed Kabir said that when Selim appeared in the court after the High Court bail expired and applied for fresh bail, the court rejected it and ordered him to be sent to jail.
According to the case documents, on November 7, 2019, a raid was conducted at the Chattogram Shopping Complex in Chattogram and former chairman (chain carrier) of the District Commissioner's Office Nazrul Islam and office assistant Taslim Uddin were arrested with a bribe of Tk 8 lakh 7 thousand and a check of Tk 91 lakh 83 thousand. The shop was owned by Nazrul's wife. The ACC has filed a case in this incident. After being caught, Nazrul and Taslim were dismissed from their jobs.
The ACC said that after a long investigation, the ACC filed a charge sheet in the case on September 25, 2024. Nazrul, Taslim, former LA branch surveyor Md. Selim, broker Nasir Ahmed and former UCBL official Ibrahim Mia were accused. Of these, Nazrul and Taslim are on bail, Ibrahim is absconding and Nasir Ahmed is dead.
The investigation revealed that despite being a fourth-class employee, Nazrul Islam was the main head of the LA branch's bribery business. Bribes ranging from 10 to 20 percent were taken against the land compensation money. Surveyor Selim was his associate.
