Former national cricketer Sami no more

Former national cricketer, BCB umpire and match referee Samiur Rahman Sami breathed his last in yesterday morning in Dhaka. Sami had been suffering from brain tumor for a long. He was buried at the Banani Navy graveyard after his Namaz-e-janza on Tuesday. 

Sami was a right arm pace bowler and was famous for his ability to swing the ball. Sami who played two ODI, was a member of Bangladesh’s first ODI team which played Pakistan in an Asia Cup in 1986 in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. 

Sami also represented Bangladesh in the ICC Trophy tournaments in 1982 and 1986 when his elder brother Yusuf Babu was also a national cricketer played along with him in the ICC Trophy. In 70s and 80s Sami and Yusuf Babu were very popular names in the domestic cricket.  

Sami was a man from a sports family when his eldest brother Zillur Rahman was a big name in the Basketball circuit in 70s and 80s.  

In domestic cricket league, Samiur Rahman played for Abahani Krira Chakra, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Bangladesh Biman, Kalabagan Krira Chakra, Azad Boys Club and Brothers Union. He represented Barisal District in the National Cricket Championship. Besides cricket, Sami also played top tier basketball in Bangladesh along with his elder brothers.

After retiring as a player, Samiur Rahman went on to officiate in 136 first class, list A and list A T20 matches as a BCB match referee. He also stood as an umpire in 17 first class and 12 list A games.
