As the FIFA World Cup, 2026 approaches, Bangladesh is once again transforming into a vibrant arena of football passion where support for favorite teams goes far beyond watching matches.

From city streets draped in giant flags to tea-stall debates over Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the tournament has become a nationwide celebration that transcends sport.

In the southern district of Patuakhali, that enthusiasm has found a unique expression inside a doctor’s chamber.

Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman, a pain management specialist and assistant professor of anesthesiology at Patuakhali Medical College Hospital, has captured public attention with an unusual World Cup offer: patients who visit his chamber wearing an Argentina jersey will receive a 50 percent discount on consultation fees.

The announcement, posted on his verified Facebook account, quickly went viral, drawing reactions from football fans across the country.

World Cup fever sweeps Bangladesh: When football passion reaches the doctor’s chamber

Currently charging Tk 600 per consultation at Greenview Hospital in the town’s Kazipara area, Dr. Habibur said Argentina supporters will pay only Tk 300 during the World Cup period.

“I have been supporting Argentina since childhood. The World Cup creates a festive atmosphere among people. This is simply my way of sharing that joy and celebrating football,” he told UNB.

Residents in Patuakhali said the doctor’s offer perfectly captures the festive spirit surrounding the tournament.

“Various businesses offer World Cup promotions, but hearing such an announcement from a doctor is truly different,” said local resident Shakil Islam.

Social media users have also embraced the idea, sharing the post widely and praising the doctor for bringing a touch of humor and excitement to healthcare services.

For many Bangladeshis, the World Cup is more than a sporting event. It is a cultural celebration that unites people across age groups, professions and social backgrounds.

Rickshaw pullers, students, office workers, teachers and doctors all become part of the same conversation, discussing tactics, predicting results and defending their favorite teams with unwavering loyalty.
