Flower shrubs make Alipur people solvent

Many locals have became self-independent by production and trading flower shrubs that are used as brooms at Alipur village of Gohaliabari union of Kalihati upazila of Tangail. 

Using their typical local accent and tongue, the flower-shrub sellers call and sell their home-made products in different parts of the town. These flower-shrubs are now sold not only in the district town but also in the villages.  As there is a great demand for these flower-shrubs, many people are becoming self-independent by selling it in different districts of the country including Tangail. 

Many people including Khaleda, Saiful of Alipur village of Kalihati upazila in Tangail have become self-independent by this business. Many are getting away from unemployment problem as well as making more profit at lower cost. Some people from Alipur village of Gohaliabari union of Kalihati upazila in Tangail are making these flower-shrubs and selling it in different places including Tangail.

In the hilly areas of Sylhet, Rangamati and Khagrachhari there is a type of flowering plant called Ulu flower. This flowering tree looks a bit like a Kash-flower. Shrubs traders collect these flowering plants from the hilly areas. 

Later they make the flower-shrubs with these flower trees. After making broomsticks out of them, they sell them in different parts of the country including Tangail, Dhaka, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Sirajganj, Gazipur, Bogra and other parts of the country. 

According to some artisans, the moneylenders bring a type of flowering plant called Ulu flower from the hilly areas which grows only in hilly areas. They make flower shrubs with them. They make usually 100-150 flower shrubs each day. Later, moneylenders sell it to wholesalers and retailers at Tk 35 to 40. Since the demand for this flower shrubs are growing high, the profit is also marked high. This shrub is in demand almost all the year round. So we make this all year round.

Khaleda, a shrub maker from Alipore village said, "I have been making these shrubs for several years”. These flowers are brought to us by the moneylenders. After making each piece, he pays us Tk 4. Later they are sold by wholesalers and retailers in the city at different prices. Khaleda said she makes over a thousand of bushes every season. The extra income from making bushes has brought prosperity to her family.

Flower bushes - Craftsman Saiful said, I make about 100 hundred flower bushes every day. The moneylender brought us these flowering plants and necessary tools. We just make bushes and make a living from the extra income of making these.

Flower bushes - businessman (moneylender) Ramzan said housewives' choice to clean the house with paved floor and tiled flower bushes. The use of this shrub can be seen in most homes. The main raw materials for making this shrub are collected from the hilly area. He collected flowers from Shitakunda. 

He said, “I have started this business few years ago. At present I have 12 artisans working here. He said, firstly I collect these flowering plants from Shitakunda. Later I do it by collecting from Cox's Bazar, Rangamati and Khagrachhari. The demand is also good as there is a great necessity for this flower bush throughout the year. We are being self-independent in this new business”.
