Flood hits over 600 pry schools in Tangail

According to the district primary education office, there are a total of 1,624 government primary schools in 12 upazilas of Tangail. Of these, 643 schools have been affected by the flood. 

Many schools are submerged. After being submerged in the flood waters for a long time, the soil became soft and the floor of some school buildings have been broken-up, the walls of some of them and the stairs of some of them are also damaged badly. 

In some schools, deep holes have been created by the speedy water flow. 65 schools built as shelters are also damaged. 

The district primary education office said that it would cost around Tk 6.5 crore to repair and rebuild the damaged schools. 

Of these, 36 lakh for 101 damaged schools in Sadar upazila, 28 lakh for 41 schools in Ghatail, 32 lakh for 63 schools in Gopalpur, 32 lakh for 51 in Basail, 9 lakh for 51 in Basail, 44 lakh for 72 in Delduar, 41 lakh for 6 in Mirzapur and 102 in Kalihati, 51 lakh for 64 in Nagarpur, 1 crore 3 lakh for 49 in Bhuapur and 33 lakh for repairing seven schools in Sokhipur, the primary education office confirmed it.

 Besides, a demand letter of Tk 1 crore 20 lakh has been sent to the Department of Primary Education for the reconstruction of Paiksha  Maijhail Primary School, which was washed away by the floods in the Jamuna.

Besides, 11 primary schools in Bhuapur and Kalihati upazilas are under threat as a result of this year's floods and river erosion, district primary education office sources said. District Primary Education Officer Abdul Aziz said the damage was high as the floods were prolonged.  Assessing the damage, the schools have been asked to allocate for repairs. All the repairmen  will work after receiving the allotment.
