A group of Bangladeshi smugglers has attacked an Indian border guard while trying to enter the country illegally, said a press release.

A flag meeting between BSF and BGB has taken place on the matter.

On 17th January, at 1035 hrs, troop of Border Out Post Sikra, under Krishnanagar Sector of BSF South Bengal Frontier in Nadia District of West Bengal stopped 04 Bangladeshi smugglers who were illegally entering the Indian border from Bangladesh side, according to the press release.

"The BSF Jawan on duty challenged them and confronted them strongly but the smugglers brutally attacked the jawan with sharp weapons."

The jawan sustained serious injuries on his hand and head due to the attack. The smugglers also snatched his weapon and fled towards Bangladesh.

On getting this information, the other jawans reached the spot to help the injured jawan, but till then the smugglers had already fled from the spot. An FIR of the incident is being lodged in the local Police Station.

The injured BSF jawan was given first aid at the Border post and thereafter taken to Government Hospital, Chapra, and later to Kolkata, where he remains in critical condition.

"It is often observed  that when smugglers from Bangladesh with criminal intent are not successful in their illegal activities, they resort to deadly attacks on the BSF jawans. BSF jawans are attacked by smugglers and their accomplices in a planned manner. Despite grave provocation and brutal attack on BSF personnel, BSF maintained utmost restraint and did not resort to lethal fire," read the statement.
