A Faridpur court has sentenced five individuals to death and one to ten years in prison in connection with the 2019 murder of easy bike driver Shawkat Molya.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday by Judge Maksudur Rahman of Faridpur Additional District and Sessions Judge Court No.1. Four of the convicts were present in court, while one remains absconding.
The convicted are Mehedi Abu Kawser, Jony Molya, Rajesh Rabi Das, Robin Molya alias Vicky, and the absconding Rasel Sheikh. Additionally, Badsha Sheikh from Rajbari district received a 10-year prison sentence along with a fine of Tk 10,000, in default of which he will serve an additional 10 months of imprisonment.
Each of the five sentenced to death has also been fined Tk 20,000, with a one-year imprisonment in default.
According to the case file, Shawkat Molya, 20, went missing after leaving home with his e-rickshaw on 14 November 2019. His body was found the next morning in a paddy field near the Bypass Road.
