A Dhaka court has sent five lawyers to jail on completion of their remand in a case filed at Shahbagh Police Station over the clash during vote counting of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order, rejecting their bail petition on Tuesday. Earlier, Inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of police Abul Kalam Azad, also the Investigation Officer of the case, produced them before the court on completion of the three-day remand and appealed to the court to keep them confined inside jail.

After hearing both sides, the court sent the five lawyers to jail. The lawyers who were sent to jail are Supreme Court lawyers Kazi Bashir Ahmed, Hasanuzzaman Tushar, Tariqul Islam, Enamul Hossain Suman and Osman Chowdhury.

On March 9, a team of DB arrested the five lawyers for their alleged involvement with the chaos and violence during the vote counting of the 2024-25 election of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). Later, the court granted a three-day remand for five lawyers.

Earlier, the vote counting in the two-day SCBA election was halted Saturday (March 9) morning following an altercation due to alleged interference of a group of outsiders on behalf of a candidate.

The outsiders attacked some lawyers who were present at the polling centre in the SCBA auditorium as the votes were scheduled to be counted there. A lawyer suffered injuries and other lawyers, including candidates and members of the election subcommittee, left the SCBA premises amid a tense situation.
