7 arrested in Sundarbans with 20 bottles of pesticides

Police arrested six fishermen and a poison seller for illegally fishing in the Sundarbans on Wednesday while fishing in the Sundartala canal area.

Later, according to the confession of the fishermen, a poison seller named Alamin (40) was arrested from Vaidyamari Bazar with 20 bottles of pesticides. The other arrested fishermen are Shivpad Mandal (42), Govinda Roy (35) of Sundartala area of Chila union of Mongla upazila. Dulal Sheikh (25), Arizul Fakir (35), Subrata Roy (25) and Amin Sheikh (19). Poison seller Al Amin is the son of Sultan of Katakhali area of Sundarbans Union. Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Md. Asif Iqbal gave this information. Officer-in-charge (OC) of Mongla Police Station Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury and other police officials were present at the time.

Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police, Asif Iqbal said that at present it is forbidden to enter the Sundarbans and catch fish. But in defiance of this ban, some unscrupulous fishermen are entering the Sundarbans for catching fish. As part of regular patrols, six fishermen were caught fishing in the Sundartala area on Wednesday.

According to the information given by the fishermen, the poison seller Al Amin was arrested in a raid the Vaidyamari market. At that time, 20 bottles of poison were seized from Al Amin's shop. Six carats of shrimp, a net and a trawler were seized from the fishermen. The detainees will be handed over to the Bagerhat court on Thursday morning after filing a case against them for applying pesticides in forest wetlands, he said.
