Fisheries Week held in Ishwardi

Three fish farmers have been given awards and honors for their special contribution in various fields of fish production on National Fisheries Week at Ishwardi upazila of Pabna. 

The seven-day fishing week ended on Friday. The slogan of this year's fisheries week is "Nirapad Mache Bharabo Desh, Bangabandhur Bangladesh (Let the Country be Filled with Safe Fish and Build Bangabandhu's Bangladesh)."

Those anglers who got the award are the owner of ‘Organic Fish Farm’ Anishur Rahman Payal in Mokarram­pur village of Muladuli Union, small fish farmer Md. Siddikur Rahman, and cage fish farmer Md. Monirul Islam from Laxmikunda union of Dadapur village. 

They are awarded with crests and certificates. On 24 July, fish farmers were awarded at the opening and prize distribution ceremony of the Fisheries Week held at the Upazila Auditorium. Ishwardi upazila administration and senior fisheries officer's office organized this event. 

A colorful procession is taken out and fish fry are released to mark the inauguration of the Fisheries Week. Nuruzzaman Biswas, Member of Parliament of Pabna-4 Constituency (Ishwardi-Atgharia) was present as the chief guest in these programs. Upazila Chairman Naib Ali Biswas, Vice Chairman Abdus Salam Khan, Atia Ferdous Kakali were present as special guests on the occasion. It was presided over by Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer (Additional Charge) Md. Shariful Islam After the discussion, the guests released fish fry in the upazila pond.

Earlier, a press conference was held at the upazila conference room on July 23 afternoon. Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer (ongoing duty) Md. Shariful Islam gave a detailed explanation to the journalists about the various aspects and programs of the Fisheries Week. In the press conference, it was informed that Ishwardi has 2476 ponds, 1 river and various canals and lakes. The total amount of reservoir is 2220 hectares. There are nine fish markets. In the last few years, fish production in Ishwardi upazila has increased by 85 tonnes.

Shariful Islam said that the number of fishermen registered in Ishwardi upazila is 1693 people. There are 1517 fishermen. Annual fish demand is 5660.78 tonnes and the production of fish is 5745 tonnes. More than 85 tonnes of fish are produced annually. 

He said that the fish farmers should focus on increasing the production of more fish by using sustainable and environment friendly technology. At that time, Zakia Sultana, the extension officer of the Upazila Fisheries Department and the manager of the fish seed production farm Md. Rezaul Islam was present.
