First Armed Resistance Day celebrated in Gazipur

Published : 19 Mar 2022 09:09 PM

In 1971 the first Armed Resistance against Pakistan was formed in this day on 19th March in Gazipur.  Before attacking the Bengalis, the Pakistan army planned to disarm the Bengali army before the start of attacking Bengali in 25th March of 1971 but the Bengali army of the second East Bengal Regiment at Joydebpur denied to handover the arms. Number of Bengalis, including Hurmat, Niyamat, and Manu Khalifa, were martyred in the resistance that day. And that is the first arm resistance of Bengali. The “Jagroto Chowrongi” memorial sculpture in Joydebpur commemorates them.

Due to this armed resistance of the brave Bengalis, the plan to disarm the Bengali army of the second East Bengal Regiment at Joydebpur failed. News of Joydebpur's clash with the slogan 'Take the path of Joydebpur and make Bangladesh independent,’ spread like wildfire all over the country.

To mark this day the people of Gazipur celebrated the first Armed Resistance Day on Saturday. District Awami League President and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque was present as the chief guest at the discussion held at Natmandir near the Deputy Commissioner's office. It was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Anisur Rahman. Special guest was Police Super S M Shafiullah, freedom fighter Abdur Rauf Nayan, Professor M A Bari and others. Officers and employees of various departments including district administration officials and heroic freedom fighters were present at the time.

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque said, "We have got an independent country by drive away Pakistanis." The first armed resistance was formed at Joydebpur in 1971 which is a history. At that time freedom-loving people all over the country were encouraged by the news of the resistance war in Joydebpur.
