Several vehicles and case evidence collected by police have been burnt after a fire broke out at a dumping station behind Shahbagh Police Station in the capital on Tuesday.

The fire broke out at the dumping station behind the Shahbag police station around 2:45pm on Tuesday, said Rafi Al Faruk, duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room.

On information, three firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control around 2.58pm, he added.

He said, “The fire originated from the cigarette butts.”

Inspector Shah Alam of Shahbagh Police Station said “The vehicles are evidence in certain incidents. In addition to the vehicles, some other pieces of evidence were burnt in the fire.”

“We are looking into what evidence was burnt in which cases,” he added.

Sources said the location was previously used as a Control Room for the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). When the Control Room was relocated, it became a dumping station.

Trucks, buses, rickshaws, and cars seized by police from various parts of Dhaka are kept at the place.
