A female police constable allegedly committed suicide by drinking poison in Jhalokati on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Nadira Yasmin, 20, wife of Tariqul Islam. She died at the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital on Thursday night. Earlier, she was admitted to the hospital at around 4:15 pm.

According to hospital sources, Nadira Yasmin was working as a member of Jhalokati district police. Her husband Tariqul Islam is also a member of Jhalokati district police.

Relatives and colleagues said that due to a quarrel with her husband, Nadira tried to commit suicide by poisoning herself at a relative’s house near Jhalokati Sadar Police Station. She was later rescued and taken to a local hospital and later to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Confirming the information, Barisal Metropolitan Police’s Sub-Inspector (SI) Nazmul, who is in charge of Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said the body of the deceased has been sent to the morgue of the hospital for inquest and autopsy.

Jhalokati Sadar Police Officer in Charge (OC) Khalilur Rahman said, “I have heard the news of the suicide of a female police member. Primarily we are thinking that the incident may have been caused by a family feud.”
