North District Awami League Vice President ATM Peyarul Islam has been nominated for the Chattogram Zilla Parishad election, beating 16 leaders of Chattogram with the current administrator MA Salam. He was the former upazila chairman of Fatikchari.
This decision was taken at the joint meeting of Awami League's Parliamentary and Local Government People's Representative Nomination Board at Ganobhaban on Saturday. It was chaired by Awami League's Parliamentary and Local Government People's Representative Nomination Board, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. 60 Zilla Parishad candidates including Chattogram were also finalized. Elections will be held on October 17 as per the announced schedule. Nomination papers submitted by September 15, selection by September 18, appeals filed against selection of nomination papers by September 19-21 and disposal of appeals by September 22-24. September 25 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature. Symbols will be allotted on September 26.

Yunus, Former Secretary General of Liberation War Victory Mela Parishad Abul Hashem, North District Awami League General Secretary Sheikh Ataur Rahman, Awami League Leader Abu Saeed, South District Awami League Joint Secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Ravi, Organizing Secretary Prodep Das, Agricultural Affairs Secretary Advocate Abdur Rashid, North District Awami League Former Leader Md. Before this, the Zilla Parishad elections were held on December 28, 2016. North District Awami League president MA Salam was elected chairman unopposed.
Before the Zilla Parishad elections, he served as Zilla Parishad Administrator for five years. This time he got the responsibility of administrator.
Meanwhile, ATM Peyarul Islam entered politics in 1973 as the elected GS of the student parliament of Maizbhandar Ahmadiya High School. He was elected GS of the Nazirhat college's student parliament in 1979. Elected General Secretary of Fatikchari Upazila Chhatra League.
Later got the post of president of North District Chhatra League. In 1987, he was the selected publications and publication editor of Central Chhatra League and central leader of Chhatra Sangam Parishad. In 1990, he was elected chairman of Fatikchari Upazila Parishad. He was general secretary of Fatikchari Upazila Awami League. Later he served as the organizational secretary of the North District Awami League and also served as the co-editor of the Central Awami League sub-committee.
Later Peyarul Islam is serving as the Vice President of Chattogram North District Awami League.
In the 2008 national elections, he contested the election from Fatikchari by boat and lost to war criminal Salauddin Kader Chowdhury.
