Farmers of Tarash upazila are busy planting Aman varieties of paddy in the high lands of Sirajganj district. Due to non-availability of flood water this year, farmers are inclined to plant Aman paddy in their crop lands in time.

According to Tarash Upazila Agriculture Department, Bri-34, Bri-58, Bri-28, Kataribhog and Paijam varieties are being planted in Talam, Desigram, Madhainagar, Baruhas, Tarash Sadar, Magura Binod, Saguna and Naogaon unions of the upazila.

This year, the target has been set to cultivate Aman in 12,000 hectares of land in those 6 unions. In the meantime, the farmers have started the work of preparing the land, uprooting the seedlings from the seedbed and planting the seedlings in full swing.

Bazlur Rahman, a farmer of Binsara village in Baruhas union of the upazila, said that due to favorable weather conditions, they have been busy in cultivating Aman paddy this year.

He further said that the production cost of transplanted Aman paddy is also low. Farmers are inclined to plant transplanted paddy in the hope of getting better prices.

It can be seen that the farmers are cultivating Aman paddy in different areas of the upazila. Due to the high rainfall in this season, irrigation is not a problem.

This variety of paddy is 50-60 mounds per acre.Tarash Upazila Agriculture Officer Lutfunnahar Luna said that the lands of Tarash Upazila stay unused after harvesting Boro paddy during the monsoon season. Therefore, farmers are being encouraged to plant transplanted Aman paddy. So far this year, Aman has been planted in 12,000 hectares of land in the upazila.
