Farmer beaten to death during arbitration, UP chairman arrested

A farmer has died after being badly beaten by the UP chairman and his associates in a village court arbitration in Satkhira. Three people including the chairman have been arrested in the incident.

The deceased was identified as Golam Quddus, 50. He is a resident of Hijaldi village in Chandanpur union. He died at Kalaroa Upazila Health Complex on Tuesday morning.

Kalaroa Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Raj Kishore Pal said he received a telephone call from Kalaroa Upazila Health Complex on Tuesday morning. At that time, he was told that an unnatural death had taken place in Hijaldi village of Chandanpur union.

He immediately went to the hospital. Citing eyewitnesses, the SI further said that Golam Quddus was charged with a felony by his neighbour Moni and his fiancé Razia Khatun.

On the basis of this allegation, Golam Quddus was summoned on  the instructions of Chandanpur UP Chairman Monirul Islam.

An arbitration meeting was held in the village court on Friday to settle the matter. Chairman Monirul Islam and two Chowkidars Dilip and Ashok were present. Golam Quddus was convicted by the village court and  beaten with sticks by the chairman and his associates. Golam Quddus became seriously ill.

SI Raj Kishore further said that Golam Quddus was receiving treatment from home. When his condition deteriorated on Tuesday morning, he was taken to Kalaroa Upazila Health Complex. He died there on Tuesday morning.

SI quoted an initial report from Kalaroa Hospital as saying that there were signs of injuries on the body of the deceased Golam Quddus. The body of Golam Quddus has been sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

Kalaroa Police Station OC Munir Ul Gias said no case has been registered so far. However, the process is ongoing.
