Various humanitarian measures taken by the police administration of Faridpur amid the novel coronavirus pandemic has brought relief to many helpless and destitute families. Kakli Begum, a senior staff nurse at Faridpur Medical College, died at a Dhaka hospital 22 days ago, three days after giving birth to a baby girl.

A few days later, on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr, her husband Mubarak Hossain was tested corona positive. He is currently in isolation. The new-born baby is now with her old grandmother.

Upon hearing this news, the police administration of Faridpur extended a hand of sympathy to them. Faridpur Superintendent of Police Alimuzzaman hired a police officer to monitor the situation. He sent gifts and fruits to the family, so that they do not lose their morale. Mubarak Hossain said, “I got a little comfort in the midst of great hardship due to this generosity of SP Sir. I see the light of hope.”

Meanwhile, in Faridpur, when no one came forward to attend the funeral of the deputy commander of Muktijoddha Sangsad, Kamlesh Chakraborty, the policemen attended his funeral and arranged everything to complete his funeral.

It is learned that so far, humanitarian assistance has been provided to many helpless families in Faridpur by collecting Tk 12.5 lakh from the salaries of Faridpur police members. At the call of the District Superintendent of Police, a portion of a month’s salary of 1550 members of the District Police is being added to the fund as humanitarian assistance. All members voluntarily came forward in this great deed.

EDAB Faridpur District Branch President Md. Bilayet Hossain said, “Various activities undertaken by the Faridpur Police Department since the beginning of the recent corona pandemic have not only caught the attention of the public, but have also given them a glimmer of hope to survive in this transitional period.

A relief distribution committee headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Saifuzzaman has been formed for the helpless people on behalf of the district police. The hotline has been launched.”

Whenever helpless people call, the police members under the leadership of Reserve Officer SI Anwar Hossain are delivering food items on motorcycles every day. The police office where the victims used to go for legal aid is now lined with helpless people for relief.

Siddiqur Rahman, president of the Faridpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the police are entertaining people with songs, to encourage them to stay at home and maintain social distance.

During the last Eid-ul-Fitr, they were given rice, pulses, oil, salt, potatoes and two packets of vermicelli, sugar, milk and eggs. These gifts have also been given to the village police in every police station.

They have honoured the freedom fighter police. Special assistance has been given to the families of all the policemen who died in the line of duty. Other front-line fighters working to curb the spread of corona have also been helped in various ways.

Faridpur Superintendent of Police Alimuzzaman said, “After informing the police members about the helplessness of the common people, they voluntarily stood by the people by sacrificing a part of their salary. We are also part of this society. We are here to stand beside common people and share their happiness and sorrow.”

He expressed special gratitude to the members of the police for the sacrifices they had made for the common man during the corona pandemic.
