Disney’s latest superhero film The Fantastic Four: First Steps has taken the top spot at the North American weekend box office, earning a strong USD 118 million and pushing Superman to second place, according to industry estimates released on Sunday.

The film marks a reboot of the Marvel Comics franchise and stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn. The story follows a group of heroes working together to save a retro-futuristic world from the threat of the villain Galactus.

David A Gross from Franchise Entertainment Research called it “an outstanding opening,” noting that Fantastic Four had long been seen as a modest and struggling superhero brand. “It just caught up with the biggest and the best,” he added.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ Superman, starring David Corenswet as the iconic Man of Steel, dropped to second place with USD 24.9 million. Despite this, the film has crossed the USD 500 million mark globally, reflecting strong worldwide interest.

Jurassic World: Rebirth, the latest entry in the popular dinosaur saga, landed in third place with USD 13 million and has now earned a global total of USD 672.5 million. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali.

In fourth place was F1: The Movie, a racing drama featuring Brad Pitt, earning USD 6.2 million. Smurfs, starring Rihanna as Smurfette, followed in fifth with USD 5.4 million.

Other top ten films included: I Know What You Did Last Summer (USD 5.1 million), How to Train Your Dragon (USD 2.8 million), Eddington (USD 1.7 million), Saiyaara (USD 1.3 million), and Oh, Hi! (USD 1.1 million).

Experts say the box office is showing strong signs of recovery, with superhero films leading the charge.
