Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s statement on August 21 grenade attack is nothing but a mockery. Mirza Fakhrul said the 21 August Grenade attack was staged by the current ruling Awami League (AL). He also said the government is picking up innocent people and branding them as militants to get the attention of the Western world and India.
It is known to all the August 21, 2004 in Bangladesh was a shameful event in the history of the world as a peaceful rally of AL was attacked using state machinery under BNP-Jamaat regime on that day. According to August 21 grenade attack case, the conspiracy behind the 2004 attack was hatched at Tarique Rahman’s political office Hawa Bhaban.
The then BNP government and Tarique Rahman had ensured the position of militants instead of police force and they had thrown grenades from buildings. The seeds of communal politics were planted by BNP founder and military dictator Ziaur Rahman, while it spread with a strong base during the reign of his wife Khaleda Zia.
Country’s people are ashamed seeing the falsehood that BNP Secretary General is making over August 21 grenade attack, militancy and terrorism. We think the government’s all out steps to stamp out militancy would seem like a drama to the leaders of BNP as the network of militant organisations is still being operated in the country with support from the party.
The seeds of communal

With assistance, direct support and patronage of BNP, radical-communal politics, terrorism and militancy emerged in this country. We all witnessed our country was turned into a sanctuary of terrorism and militancy during BNP-Jamaat rule. The entire Bangladesh was shaken by the terrible acts of notorious militant leaders Shaykh Abdur Rahman and Siddiqur Rahman Bangla Bhai. The then BNP leaders claimed that Bangla Bhai was the creation of media.
Bangla Bhai emerged and militant organisations flourished under the patronage of the BNP’s top leadership and direct supervision of the then administration and law enforcing agencies.
We have not forgotten the terrorist attacks, including bomb attacks at Jashore’s Udichi function, on Ahmadiyya Mosque in Khulna, near Sheikh Hasina's rally ground and helipad in Kotalipara of Gopalganj, at Ramna Batmool, at the church in Baniyachar in Gopalganj and on Awami League office in Narayanganj. And the barbaric and brutal grenade attack was carried out at AL rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka, under direct supervision of BNP Tarique Rahman, aiming to kill the AL national leaders, including AL President Sheikh Hasina. Therefore, Mirza Fakhrul’s this statement is nothing but the BNP's mockery with the country’s people. BNP Secretary General should refrain himself from giving such untrue, false and fabricated statements.
