By misappropriating a huge sum of money, the area office of an NGO named Udayan Samaj Kallyan Sangstha decamped from Atoari of Panchgarh district recently.
According to sources, the fake NGO started functioning in a rented house of Yeasin Ali at Borodap village of Atoari upazila from July this year. Area Manager of the said NGO Ramjan Ali son of Kasim Uddin of Kismat Teorigan village of Thakugaon district hung a signboard of the NGO mentioning that the organization is registered with the Department of Social Welfare number 38/89 ( Borguna ) and also with NGO Bureau registration No. 2211 having a permission to work elsewhere in Bangladesh.
The NGO officials also appointed seven staff and 18 Field Workers and a number of teachers by signing their appointment letters on the page of a pad of Udayan Samaj Kollayan Society instead of Udayan Samaj Kallyan Sangstha.
It is alleged, the NGO officials realised a kickback of Taka 50,000 to 100,000 from each Office Staff, Taka 10,000 to 30,000 from each Field Worker and Taka 6,000 from each Teacher.
By using the signboard of Udayan Samaj Kallyan Society, the NGO opened 32 area offices in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchgarh districts and realised a huge sum of money from the Staff, Workers and Teachers it appointed. The office staff managed to escape by abandoning the office soon after the appointments were issued against the Office Staff, Field Workers and Teachers.
Kamruzzaman Mostafa, Chairman of Udayan Samaj Kallyan Samity, however, informed the NGO has no other office and no one of the office has been empowered to open any Area Office of the organisation or to appoint any staff. He also assured to take legal action against those engaged in such activities.
Abu Taher Shasmuzzaman, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Atoari upazila informed he would take action against the operators of the NGO while its area office was continuing its activity in the upazila. Now, the office being withdrawn, action against those illegal operators of the NGO will be taken by the law enforcement agency members.
However, it is learnt, the organization is continuing its operation in some areas of other Upazilas.
