Fake magistrates detained for extortion

Police arrested five people on charges of extortion under the guise of magistrates at a clinic in Natore town on Saturday afternoon.

The incident took place at Memory Diagnostic Center on Hospital Road in Nichabazar area of Natore town. The detainees said they were all members of International Human Rights and Detective News Society. 

The detainees were identified as Sirajul Islam, son of Abdus Salam of Siyapara of Kotwali police station, Atiqur Rahman, son of Hasib Uddin of Fulbari Gate area of Khanjahan police station, Moniruzzaman, son of Hazrat Ali of Munshiganj Sadar police station, Mahbub Alam Khan, son of Abdul Hai Khan of East Rampura of Dhaka. Ali Khan's son Arifur Rahman Nayan.

Toukir Rahman Tanu, owner of Memory Diagnostic Center said those detainees tried to extort money from his diagnostic center by introducing themselves as magistrates and various members of International Human Rights and Detective News Society.

At that time, when he became suspicious about their incoherent behavior and conversation, he called 999 emergency number and sought their cooperation. Later, police arrived on the spot and took them to the police station following arrest.

Meanwhile, Abdul Quddus, owner of another clinic named Gopalpur Diagnostic Center in Lalpur upazila of Natore claimed these same people pretending to be magistrates forced him into paying them a fine of Tk 10,000 on Friday.

Natore Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Matin said legal action was being taken against the detainees.
