Expansion of zinc-enriched paddy farming stressed

Production of zinc-enriched verities of paddy is needed across the country to meet the nutritional demand as well as to strengthen immunity system.

In this regard, a workshop was held on increasing the cultivation of zinc-enriched paddy, wheat and lentils as well as including them in government procurement and distribution system in Sherpur on Tuesday afternoon.

HarvestPlus Bangladesh organized the workshop at Sherpur Sadar Upazila Parishad Hall Room under Bangladesh Initiative to Enhance Nutrition Security and Governance (BIeNGS) project funded by the European Union. 

HarvestPlus, World Vision and Development Association are implementing the project in six upazilas of Sherpur and Jamalpur.

Sherpur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Firoz Al Mamun presided over the function while Sherpur Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Rafiqul Islam was present as the chief guest.

Additional Deputy Director of Sherpur Agricultural Extension Department Golam Rasul, Representative of Civil Surgeon's Office Dr. Akram Hossain and others spoke as special guests on the occasion.

The speakers highlighted the need to increase zinc-enriched verities of paddy to meet the nutritional demand and to increase the supply of these varieties through government procurement and distribution.
