Police have filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act against 50 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations in Chauddagram, with former municipality mayor Mizanur Rahman named as the prime accused.
Chauddagram Police Station OC Md Arif Hossain confirmed the case on Thursday.
According to the case statement, AL and affiliated organisation leaders and activists gathered at Sarpati in Chiora Union on September 27 to mark former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s 80th birthday. They allegedly cut a cake and chanted slogans against the government.
A police team led by SI Morshed Alam went to the spot after receiving information about the gathering, but those present fled. The SI later filed the case, naming 31 people and 20–30 unidentified persons.
Police have arrested four people, including Chhatra League activists Amzad Hossain Morshed and Alamgir Hossain Zahid and AL leader Majid. They were sent to jail by a court.
The OC said activists of the banned AL and its affiliated organisations had been involved in activities aimed at disrupting law and order. Efforts to arrest the other accused were continuing.
Mizanur Rahman alleged that the government was using police to suppress AL leaders and activists through “false” cases and harassment. #EK
