A Dhaka court has granted another three-day remand for interrogation of former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), retired Lieutenant General Sheikh Mamun Khaled, in connection with the Delwar Hossain murder case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station over the anti-discrimination movement.
On Monday (April 6), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Siddiq Azad passed the remand order following a petition submitted by the investigation officer. The information was confirmed by Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam.
Earlier, a team of Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police arrested the former military official during a raid in the Mirpur area of the capital around 12:30 am on March 25. The court subsequently granted a five-day remand, followed by another six-day remand on March 31.
After completion of the two previous remand phases totaling 11 days, the investigation officer, DB Police Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin, produced him before the court again on Monday seeking a fresh four-day remand.
In the application, the investigation officer stated that interrogation of Mamun Khaled had yielded important information relevant to the incident, which is assisting the ongoing investigation. The information provided by the accused is currently being verified, and further questioning was deemed necessary.
State prosecutors Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon and Jamal Uddin Marjin argued in favor of the remand, while defense lawyers Morshed Hossain Shahin and Nazrul Islam Pakhi sought cancellation of the remand and prayed for bail.
After hearing both sides, the court allowed a three-day remand.
According to the case statement, at around 3:30 pm on July 19, 2024, between 500 and 700 activists of the Awami League allegedly attacked a peaceful student-public demonstration in the Mirpur-10 Falpatti area using local weapons. It is alleged that, following instructions from Sheikh Mamun Khaled, indiscriminate gunfire was opened on the protesters.
Delwar Hossain sustained gunshot injuries during the incident and later died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Shyamoli on July 21. A murder case was subsequently filed with Mirpur Police Station in July 2025.
