A Dhaka court has granted a six-day remand for former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lieutenant General (Retd.) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, in connection with the Delwar Hossain murder case linked to the anti-discrimination movement in the capital’s Mirpur area.
On Tuesday (March 31), he was produced before the court after completion of a five-day remand in the case. The investigation officer, Detective Branch (DB) Police Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin, sought a fresh seven-day remand to uncover the main mystery behind the incident.
Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi argued in favour of the remand, while defence lawyers opposed the plea and sought cancellation of remand along with bail. After hearing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Jewel Rana granted a six-day remand for the accused.
The information was confirmed by Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam.
Earlier, a team of Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police arrested the retired army officer during a raid in Mirpur at around 12:30 am on March 25. The following day, the court had approved a five-day remand.
According to the case statement, around 3:30 pm on July 19, 2024, between 500 and 700 leaders and activists of the Awami League allegedly attacked a peaceful student-public protest at Mirpur-10 Falpatti using locally made weapons. It is alleged that indiscriminate firing was carried out on demonstrators following instructions from Sheikh Mamun Khaled.
Delwar Hossain sustained critical gunshot injuries during the incident and later died on July 21 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Shyamoli.
The case was filed with Mirpur Police Station in July 2025.
