A Dhaka court has granted a 7-day remand for former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque in connection with a case involving allegations of corruption and forgery of court documents.
On Wednesday, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanauallah passed the order after Inspector Khalek Mia of Shahbagh Police Station, the investigating officer, presented Haque before the court seeking a 10-day remand. Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favor of the remand. After the hearing, the judge granted a 7-day remand.
The case, filed under Sections 219 and 466 of the Penal Code, accuses Justice Haque of corruptly issuing or altering court orders, reports, judgments, or decisions and forging judicial or government records while holding public office.
Earlier, on 24 July, DB police arrested him from a residence in Dhanmondi and produced him before the court in a separate case linked to the killing of teenage protester Abdul Kaiyum Ahad during last year’s anti-discrimination movement in Jatrabari, for which he was sent to jail.
The corruption and forgery case was filed on 27 August last year by Supreme Court lawyer Muhammad Mujahidul Islam at Shahbagh Police Station. The complaint alleges that Justice Khairul, influenced by then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and motivated by promises of favorable post-retirement postings, unlawfully altered a short verdict issued on 10 May 2011 and illegally published a full judgment on 16 September 2012, aiming to please her.
