A Dhaka court has again granted a three-day remand for interrogation of former army officer and former Member of Parliament Masud Uddin Chowdhury in connection with the Delwar Hossain murder case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station over incidents linked to the anti-discrimination movement.
On Monday (April 27), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Monirul Islam passed the order after hearing a remand petition submitted by the investigation officer. The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin of the Detective Branch (DB) Mirpur Division, had sought a seven-day remand.
Public prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favor of remand, claiming the accused was one of the key actors during the political events of the “1/11” period and that further interrogation was necessary to obtain complete information. During the hearing, Masud Uddin Chowdhury protested certain allegations, calling them false.
Defense lawyer Touhidul Islam Sajib opposed the remand prayer, highlighting the accused’s various health complications. He argued that the accused had already been placed on two phases of remand totaling eight days, yet the investigation officer failed to specify any significant findings. The defense also stated that Chowdhury had undergone medical treatment for 15 days and was brought to court despite illness, requesting the court to consider his physical condition and reject the remand plea.
After hearing both sides, the court allowed a three-day remand.
According to the case details, on July 19, 2024, at around 3:30 pm, during a peaceful student-public protest at the Fruit Market area of Mirpur-10 in the capital, 500–700 activists allegedly attacked demonstrators with locally made weapons. The case alleges that, following instructions from Sheikh Mamun Khaled, indiscriminate gunfire was opened on protesters.
Victim Delwar Hossain sustained serious bullet injuries during the incident and later died on July 21 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Shyamoli. The murder case was filed with Mirpur Police Station in July 2025.
Notably, Masud Uddin Chowdhury was arrested from his residence in the Baridhara DOHS area of Dhaka late at night on March 23. The following day, March 24, a court granted five days’ remand for questioning him in a case filed with Paltan Model Police Station. He was subsequently shown arrested and remanded in multiple cases.
