The efforts of the government to supply electricity to every corner of the country deserve plaudits. The country has witnessed massive development in power sector over the past decade. The incumbent government over the past years has developed the power sector in a planned and strategic way addressing it as one of the most essential sectors for sustainable development of the country.
There was a time when six to eight hours of load-shedding during summer was a regular phenomenon in most of the towns of Bangladesh. Gone are the days when round the clock power supply was more of a distant-dream to us. However, we are now self-sufficient in power generation and our generation capacity surpasses our demand. In 2009, the number of people having access to electricity was 47 percent, which now increased to 99 percent. Reportedly, the country’s power generation capacity has increased around five times during the last 12 years. Indeed, the efforts of the government to improve country’s power sector set an example for our future leaders.
The government should take
necessary steps to improve power distribution and
transmission system in villages and remote areas
It needs no mentioning that power situation has improved in big cities including Dhaka but still load shedding occurs frequently in village areas due to limitation of transmission and distribution system. Hence, the government should take necessary steps to improve power distribution and transmission system in villages and remote areas instead of increasing generation capacity. Also, necessary steps should be taken to supply uninterrupted electricity at specific voltages and frequencies.
It is discouraging to note that in Bangladesh renewable energy contributes approximately 4 per cent to the country's national energy power mix. Considering this, the government should formulate and implement new policies to increase the production and consumption of renewable energy in order to embrace environment-friendly energy production.
