The price of eggs was increased step by step in Bogura. The price was gradually hiked from the farm to dealer and then wholesale markets to retail markets in stages. Moreover, the supply of eggs has decreased in the markets. The egg market is in control of an unseen syndicate in Bogura.
The price of eggs is Tk 11.01 per piece which was being sold at Tk 12.50 to Tk 13 per piece. It was being sold at Tk 13.50 to Tk 14 at retail markets. The price of each egg is increased by Tk 2.50 to Tk 3 when it is being sold at retail market from the dealers. The retail businessmen alleged that the market is being controlled by influential dealers. It is behind the egg price hike.
While visiting the egg markets on Monday, it was known that the price of four pieces of egg was being sold at Tk 54 to Tk 55 at Rail Line Bazar in Bogura for the last three days. The wholesale and retail eggs are sold here. The price of four pieces of eggs was Tk 50 to Tk 52 here around 10 days ago. The price hike of eggs in the markets created mixed reaction among the common people. Moreover, the retailers are in a fix over the price hike. They are being unable to sell eggs after buying them at a high price. So, the sale of eggs has decreased as well.
It was known that many big companies, including Kazi Farm and VIP, and local farmers supply eggs to the businessmen in Bogura. Kazi Farm is one of the top egg suppliers. The dealers bought eggs at Tk 11.01 per piece from Kazi Farm for the last few days. However, the dealers sold Tk 12.60 to Tk 13 per piece egg to the wholesalers. The price is Tk 13.50 to Tk 14 at retail level.
According to Bogura District Livestock Services office, there is no fear of crisis in egg markets as more eggs are produced than the demand in Bogura.
Seeking anonymity, a dealer said eggs are not supplied from the farms according to the demand. Moreover, less eggs are being given from the farms. Eggs need to be collected from other districts as less eggs are found according to the demand. So, we had to sell eggs at a high price.
The retailers said the dealers mainly built the syndicate. They buy eggs at Tk 11.01 per piece and sell at Tk 12 to Tk 13 per piece to us. We have no choice but selling the eggs at Tk 13.50 per piece.
Sales Officer of Bogura of Kazi Farm, Saiful Islam, said we supply around 2 to 3 lakh eggs in the markets of the district every day through 22 to 23 dealers. We are supplying eggs to the dealers at the rate fixed by the government. If they sell eggs at a high price, we are not responsible for that.
Assistant Director of Directorate of National Consumers’ Rights Protection Bogura Mehedi Hasan said we have been monitoring the egg markets for a long time. If there is any dishonest syndicate in the egg market, it will be dissolved. Legal action will be taken against them.
