The price of eggs has reached a new high in the markets of Jhenidah. The price has been touching the sky height day by day. The upward trend was visible immediately before the Eid-ul- Fitr. Now every cage of 30 pieces of the egg is sold between Taka 245 and 250, while it was Taka 180 to 190 a few days back.
Asadul Haque, a public servant, said the price of beef and mutton went high about two months back. Since then the people, especially, the low income group was depending o the egg. But the higher price has slapped them. A consumer at Arappur area in Jhenidah district town said that they were consuming the boiled egg at Taka 12 to 13 a piece, while the price was re-fixed at Taka 15. The increased price was depriving the poor from their daily consumption of protein, as well as light food.
Tapan Adhikary, a hotel and restaurant owner at Shailkupa upazila town, said that they are compelled to re-fix the egg price due to price hike of the raw egg. Egg vendor Apurba Saha said that usually the price increased before the Eid and other huge religious festivals, which back in normal shape within a week. But the situation was different in the immediate past Eid market. There is no sign of decreasing the price within a week or two, Apurba opined.
Many people became angry after hearing the price. “Egg is a common food item because it is easy to cook and cheap. If this goes out of our reach, we will have to go without protein,” said a person of Shailkupa.
