The speakers at a seminar called upon the media to play an effective role in implementing the government's plan to deal with the challenges of climate change.
They said that the issue of facing the challenges of climate change is global. Bangladesh is not out of it. The government has adopted the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan (MCPP) for 2022 to 2041. People's involvement should be increased in the implementation of this
government plan. In this regard, the role of the media should also be strengthened.
Speakers made these remarks at the seminar titled "Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan: Role of Mass Media" at the National Institute of Mass Communication (Nimco) Auditorium on Sunday.
Speakers said the MCPP has incorporated the vision and directives of Bangabandhu regarding environment and climate change. The MCPP is a guide to move from climate related danger to prosperity, they said.
Department of Environment Director (Climate Change and International Convention) Mirza Shawkat Ali delivered the keynote address at the seminar presided over by Nimco Additional Director General Sufi Zakir Hossain.
In his speech, Shawkat emphasised the global climate crisis and its diverse effects on countries like Bangladesh.
Malik Fida A Khan, a member of the National River Conservation Commission, advocated for integrating climate concerns into existing plans like the Delta Plan, SDGs, and Smart Bangladesh Plan to facilitate the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan's implementation.
He mentioned projects such as creating a Green Belt to protect coastal areas and utilising floating agriculture techniques, citing Vietnam's similar initiatives as potential inspirations.
Executive President of South Asian Climate Change Journalists Forum (SACCJF) Keramat Ullah Biplab and Secretary General Asaduzzaman Samrat also spoke on the occasion.
Media workers from different government and private organizations and officials of different levels of NIMCO took part in the seminar.
