Highlighting Bangladesh’s progress on the 48th Victory Day, finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has said that the country’s economy is doing much better than many other countries. “We are in the most advantageous position in the context of global economy,” he said on Monday at a Victory Day programme organised by Cumilla District Awami League unit in Cumilla.

“After the independence in 1971, our father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started rebuilding the nation with so many dreams. Now under the leadership of his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we are working to fulfill those dreams,” he said.

“Bangladesh has already fulfilled the criteria to be recognised as a developing country”. The government has drafted 20-year plan to be a developed country by 2041. The finance minister is sanguine. He said the world witnessed financial crisis in several occasions in the last two decades, but Bangladesh did not face such crisis. Even some Asian countries including Indonesia and South Korea also faced financial crisis.

“Bangladesh is in most advantageous position comparing to the global economy context. Now we are passing the most beautiful time in the history of Bangladesh’s economy,” he said. The finance minister highlighted some facts and figures and said that the GDP growth rate was 8.15 per cent in the last fiscal year, which was a record.

“In the current fiscal, we are expecting to achieve 8.25 to 8.30 per cent growth. Our GDP will reach double digit by 2024,” he hoped. He said by 2030, the government will provide employment to 30 million youths. “There will be no job crisis in the country.” According to the new 20-year plan, an individual per capita income will reach $12,500 in 2041. The extreme poor rate, which is now 8.48 per cent, will come down to zero by 2031.
