The 49km Madarganj-Dhanbari road development project worth Tk 658.12 crore is likely to be approved by today’s meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).

Development of the 49km road from Madarganj Upazila of Jamalpur district to Dhanbari Upazila of Tangail district will help improve industries and business activities in the area, which will ultimately help the overall economic development of the country, said an official of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges.

The ministry’s ongoing work for widening the 49km road has been turned into a full-fledged project officially named “Madarganj-Koyra-Mansurnagar (Kazipur) -Abdullah Mor (Sarishabari) -Dhanbari Road Development”.

An official of planning commission said a meeting of the Project Evaluation Committee (PEC) was held on August 16 last year after receiving a proposal from the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges.

It has been recommended to present it at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) as the recommendations given at that meeting have been complied with, he said.

Once approved, the project will be implemented by the Department of Roads and Highways (RHD) by December 2023, starting this year, he added.

Mamun-al-Rashid, a member of the Physical Infrastructure Division of the Planning Commission in charge of the project, said if the project is implemented, uninterrupted, traffic-free and safe road communication system will be established from Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur district to Dhanbari upazila of Tangail district.

This will give impetus to industry and trade in the project area and will lead to overall economic development, he said adding that, so the project is approvable.

According to sources, the length of Madarganj-Koyra Mansurnagar (Kazipur) -Abdullah Mor (Sarishabari) -Dhanbari road is 49 km.

The road connects Madarganj-Koyra-Kamarpara-Charjamira of Jamalpur district with Mansurnagar (Kazipur) Abdullah Mor and Kendua Bazar of Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj district and connects with Dhanbari upazila of Tangail district.

The road was handed over from LGED to the Department of Roads and Highways in June 2019 as a district highway.

At present the road is unpaved, flood-damaged and built on weak foundations.

In addition, old, narrow and damaged bridges and culverts are located in different chains of the road.

As a result, the region is lagging behind in the field of education including agriculture and industry. For this, it is proposed to implement the road from July 2020 to June 2023 at an estimated cost of Tk 602.56 crore from the Road Transport and Highways Department.

According to the Restructured Development Project Proposal (DPP), the estimated cost of the project is Tk 685.12 crore.

The main activities of the project are acquisition of 80 hectares of land, construction of 11.301 lakh cubic meters of road embankment, reconstruction of 42.60 km, 42.60 km of surfing DBS course, development of 704.2 sq m of safe approach development, construction of 16 Bus-bay, 425.54 m bridge construction, 371 m RCC culvert construction, slope protection, RCC retaining wall, RCC cross drain and saucer drain will be constructed.
